Blood Lust

Reading the profile of Mandy Patinkin in today's NYT made me think I've been cutting myself from my own source by trying to become something like 'professional.'  I've been trying to 'build' myself up into an artist by acquiring 'technique,' which I've been trying to execute 'correctly,' and god-forbid, bloodlessly.

I need to draw blood.'

(Yes, _____, you've been saying so all along.)

Or... it could just be that Mandy is the wack job he seems to be.

An essential aspect of technique is learning to know and trust oneself. Trying to figure oneself out is a constant temptation, but it's the source of a lot of tension.
Learning to research oneself without succumbing to doubtful tear-it-all-down-and-start-over questioning is tough stuff.
Remember the "terroir" coaching sessions? Those awkward arm gestures were golden.
You do need to shift your focus to learning craft to support your work rather than as an end in itself. I think that's what you're discovering and I'm happy to hear it.
You have A LOT of richness in you. I look forward to seeing more of it in your work.
