Beautiful statement. It doesn't really make up for his willingness to have been a good soldier and lobby the U.S. to follow Bush into a war in Iraq under false pretenses, but it helps.

I put my ballot in the mail this morning. Hope nobody out there neglects to vote this season.

I'm also baffled that ANYBODY could be "undecided" at this point. (That people actually support McCain/Palin is a given I just had to accept.) I'm curious: Are you running into undecideds and McCain supporters down there, David? Do they make any sense to you at all?

I run into pro-McCain people among the undergraduates, but they seem merely to have inherited their "conservative" views from family, and haven't much thought their positions through. I'd call them more apolitical than anything else. I've run into two or three undecideds, including my hairdresser, who told me that she was a Hillary supporter but that Obama was a Muslim. It was all I could do not to impose sense on her and hear her out, but she had the scissors, so I let it go....

Texans who know tell me Obama will win the urban centers--e.g., Houston, Dallas--and lose the suburbs. I don't exactly love this place.

Yes, well . . . that particular trend doesn't really distinguish Texas from Oregon.
